The Chemical Business Association (CBA) has issued new guidelines for the safe transporting of packaged chemicals.
The guidelines have been endorsed by the HSE and aim to complement the Department for Transport’s code of practice, which sets basic standards for load stowage and security.
Figures released by the HSE reveal that more than 1200 people are injured every year by unsafe loads on vehicles. The CBA’s guidelines outline the legal duties that need to be followed in ordered to safely secure loads, such as weight distribution, segregation, and securing methods for different types of packaged goods. They also stress the importance of effective induction and refresher training for staff in loading, unloading, and risk assessment procedures.
CBA director Peter Newport said: “We are pleased to create our sixth HSE-endorsed industry standard for the chemical supply chain. The securing of loads is an essential element in the safe distribution of chemical materials and in maintaining the confidence of both the general public and regulators in the industry.”
The guidelines can be viewed in full on the Chemical Business Association’s website.
