Fire-detection manufacturer Hochiki Europe has published free guidance on the code of practice for emergency lighting.

The A6-size publication offers guidance to BS5266 standards, which state that in the event of a fire people must be able to find their way to a place of safety using escape routes illuminated by sufficient lighting.

The standards outline the maximum viewing distances and luminance conditions for safety signs, minimum height levels of fixtures, acceptable glare levels, suitable positioning of emergency luminaries, and acceptable routine-testing schedules.

The guide is said to examine the constituent parts of the standard in an easy-to-understand format. It also identifies the various types of emergency-lighting systems on the market and explains the applications for which they can be used.
