Slips and trips in public and commercial areas cost UK industry more than £500 million a year in compensation and legal fees. At this time of year, when snow and ice are making getting about even more hazardous, it is doubly important to keep such areas liquid and dirt-free.
But it's not just about keeping floors clean – the cleaning agents or methods used are also crucial to maintaining safety. Consequently, slip-resistance testing and consultancy firm CERAM has produced a free guide on how to implement effective cleaning and maintenance regimes for slip-resistant floors.
According to the company, the guide outlines the fundamentals of effective cleaning regimes, advises on the use of specific cleaning methods, and details the correct application of different types of detergents in regular use.
Lisa Cobden, senior consultant at CERAM, explains: "The most slip-resistant surfaces can become slippery if they are not maintained appropriately. In some cases, the use of incorrect cleaning materials, or ineffective maintenance regimes, has cost organisations tens of thousands of pounds, often completely unnecessarily."
She concluded: "We hope this guidance document will provide architects, specifiers, installers and janitorial service providers with the necessary information with which to properly implement appropriate cleaning and maintenance regimes for the flooring they are responsible for."
