Scott Safety has produced a detailed gas-detection reference guide to help businesses understand and identify dangerous gases in the workplace.
 
The company has issued the free guide to help reduce the number of fatalities and injuries caused by exposure to harmful gases. In 2009/10 there were seven fatalities and 91 people suffered injury after exposure to various gases while at work.
 
The guide includes specific information on the different types of technology used in gas detection, the benefits and limitations of the different sensor types and how they can be best utilised to provide the safest protection.
 
The guide also lists industries where potential activities would require the need for gas detection and notes the type of gas that could be present. It explains the type of effects that exposure to these gases could cause and the exposure limits, beyond which workers must not exceed. The tables list the lowest airborne concentration that can be detected by smell.
 
There is also guidance on the benefits of using either fixed gas-detection systems or portable systems, and a dedicated section on each of the different gas safety standards, providing clarification on what they mean and how they should be applied to different gas detection-products.
