Construction group celebrates training triumphs

04 April 2011

Knight HarwoodConstruction contractor Knight Harwood Ltd was the big winner at the Construction Health and Safety Group (CHSG)’s Annual Awards ceremony last month.

The event, which was held on 24 March at the London Hilton, Park Lane, brought together 200 guests from across the construction industry to celebrate the exceptional commitment made by individuals and organisations to health and safety training in the sector.

As well as picking up the ‘Principal contractor’ award, Knight Harwood also won the prestigious Beaumont Safety Trophy (pictured, top) for its simple, yet effective, hazard-awareness board.

Sponsored by Shirley Parsons Associates Ltd, the Beaumont Safety Trophy has been awarded since 1966, in recognition of the best new device or method of work implemented for the prevention of accidents. This year, judges were so overwhelmed by the volume of good entries that they named Stair Master Ltd as runner-up. The company was presented a ‘Highly Commended Certificate’ for its safe methods of construction in situations where stair cores require multiple flights.

Other winners on the night included:

  • Large company – Geoffrey Osborne Ltd;
  • Small company – Construction Project Services UK;
  • House building – Fairview New Homes;
  • Specialist contractor – Lovell Partnerships Ltd / A J Morrisroe & Sons Ltd;
  • Outstanding contribution to training – Persimmon Homes Ltd; and
  • New Member – ME Construction Ltd.

Sean ElsonFinally, the Chairman's Special Award, which recognises valuable and outstanding services rendered to the group, went to Sean Elson (pictured, bottom) of law firm Pinsent Masons. The award, sponsored by All Day Safety Services Ltd, was presented to Sean on account of his continued support and commitment to CHSG over the years.

CHSG president, Mike Robinson, said: “The CHSG Annual Awards is a great way of showcasing the industry’s most outstanding contributions to training. 2010 saw a large volume of high-calibre entrants from across the sector, which is why we had to show some recognition to the runner-up of the Beaumont Safety Trophy.”

Robinson also praised the group’s outgoing chair, Bob Hackett, for his dedication and commitment over the past few years.
