2010 Categories


The entry period for the 2010 SHP IOSH Awards opens on Tuesday, 6 April and closes on 30 June, 2010. The successful finalists will be revealed on this site in early August, with the eventual winners not announced until the golden envelopes are opened at the glittering awards ceremony at the London Hilton, Park Lane, on 20 October.


The 14 categories available to enter from 6 April are as follows:

BEST ACHIEVEMENT IN (seven categories):

Construction

Health Care & Emergency Services

Manufacturing

Local Authorities & Education

Transport & Logistics

Utilities & Offshore

Retail & Leisure

(including hospitality, catering, entertainment and licensed trade)



These categories are open to those who work directly in one of the seven industries/sectors above, or whose business deals primarily with that industry/sector

Criteria:

  • Projects/initiatives/campaigns that launched, or whose main activities and/or results were recorded, between January 2009 and June 2010 are eligible to enter.
  • Projects/initiatives/campaigns must have had a clear aim and positive, measurable outcomes.
  • Normal day-to-day activities, or those that would have been carried out as a matter of course, e.g. to comply with legal/accepted best-practice requirements, are less likely to be considered for an award. It should also be clear whether entries are based on your personal achievements, or those of your employer/company.



TRAINING INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to individuals or companies who have responsibility for training – whether that’s for front-line workers in your organisation, or delivering training to organisations. Commercial training providers who have developed specific and particularly innovative training approaches are also eligible to enter.

Criteria:

  • Initiatives that launched, or whose main activities and/or results were recorded, between January 2009 and June 2010 are eligible to enter.
  • The training initiative entered must have had a clear aim and positive, measurable outcomes.
  • Training that would have been carried out as a matter of course, e.g. to comply with legal/accepted best-practice requirements, or get candidates through a NEBOSH course, is less likely to be considered for an award.



INNOVATION OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to individuals and organisations, including commercial manufacturers, of any new device, service or technology that has improved health and safety in an original, cost/time-effective way.

Criteria:

  • Device/service/technology must have been developed, or gone through its main period of use, between January 2009 and June 2010.
  • The device/service/technology must have been developed in response to a clear, work-related health and safety need, and must have been/remain in use by those for whom it was developed.
  • It must be original and innovative and not merely an alternative/updated version of an existing health and safety device/service/technology.



CAMPAIGN OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to all companies and individuals who have run a successful health and safety awareness campaign that has made a tangible difference either in the workplace, or other areas affected by the entrant’s work activities.

Criteria:

  • The campaign must have been launched after January 2009.
  • The campaign must have had a clear aim, or aims, and must ultimately have been ‘won’, i.e. achieved those aims.
  • It must have been original and not merely the entrant’s implementation of an already-established industry-wide initiative.



NEW ENTRANT OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to individuals who started working in health and safety after January 2008. Individuals can enter themselves, or employers/organisations can enter on their behalf, with their consent. An endorsement by the candidate’s employer will be required.

Criteria:

  • This category is open to individuals who started their career in the health and safety sector no earlier than January 2008. They must be able to demonstrate commitment to the profession and exceptional achievement in their role.



ACHIEVER OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to individuals working in the UK or abroad who have surmounted significant obstacles to improve health and safety in their organisation – and beyond. Individuals can enter themselves, or employers can enter on their behalf, with their consent. Endorsement by an employer, if applicable, will benefit the entry.

Criteria:

  • Candidates for this award must be able to demonstrate health and safety achievement above and beyond what would normally be expected of them in their role.
  • Entries can be made on the basis of sustained achievement, or a one-off successful initiative but must the activity must have taken place between January 2009 and June 2010.



CONSULTANT OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to individuals who provide third-party occupational health and safety advice and services for clients. Individuals can enter themselves, or clients/employers can enter on their behalf, with their consent. Endorsement by a client and/or employer will benefit the entry.

Criteria:
  • Candidates for this award must be chartered members of the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health.
  • They must be able to demonstrate health and safety achievement above and beyond what would normally be expected of them in their role.
  • Entries can be made on the basis of sustained/long-term relationship with the client, or a one-off successful project but the activity must have taken place between January 2009 and June 2010.



PARTNERSHIP INITIATIVE OF THE YEAR:

This category is open to joint projects/campaigns/achievements between two or more organisations that have been successful in raising health and safety awareness and standards in the workplaces involved, or other areas affected by the partners’ activities.

Criteria:

  • The project/campaign/initiative must have been set up and implemented by two or more parties in the period January 2009 to June 2010.
  • It must have had a clear aim, or aims, and positive, measurable outcomes.
  • It must have been original and not merely the partners’ implementation of an already-established industry-wide initiative.
