Tesco.com talks about the changing times in fleet safety

Andrew Kemp, Occupational and road risk development manager at Tesco.com gave a short presentation on the changes the company has made to the management of drivers of Tesco.com delivery vans, and the huge reduction the company has seen in incidents.

Speaking of the early days of Tesco.com deliveries, Andrew said: “Van damage was becoming astronomical, some vans were being written off on the first day, with no process to control damage”.

Now, the company uses telematics to monitor and measure its fleet, as well as working with RoSPA introducing internal driving training for all Tesco.com drivers in 2006.

Working with unions and taking advice from the DVLA, the fleet, which covers 99% of the country is now far safer than before.

Telematics means that drivers’ positions and exact speeds can be seen at all times, and any incidents reported and logged immediately. Daily reports identify speeding events and are sent to managers each day.

The technology also rates drivers against their peers so that they can compete to be the safest, most efficient drivers.

And the statistics speak for themselves:

  • There has been a fall in the average number of incidents per vehicle from 60 in 2015 to eight per vehicle in 2015;
  • Speeding events in 2006 were not recorded but are thought to be in the thousands, now they are around 120 per week; and
  • Fuel savings have been made with vehicles averaging 22mpg, from 17mpg previously.

Tesco.com are now looking to introduce a driver app to help drivers further monitor their own performance.
