Park Lane Hilton, London

Practitioners from all over the UK travelled to the Park Lane Hilton in London on 2 October 2007 to attend the black-tie SHP Awards ceremony and applaud their friends, colleagues, and peers for the fantastic achievements they made in the name of health and safety last year.

In all, 14 gongs were handed out, rewarding the very best companies and individuals in the sector. When SHP decided to launch the awards, the deliberate aim was to encourage and recognise genuine good practice and achievement above and beyond the norm in as many sectors and areas of endeavour as possible. We were hugely gratified by the scale and quality of the entries submitted, and our panel of prestigious judges – including Teresa Budworth of NEBOSH, Hugh Robertson of the TUC, and Lawrence Waterman of the Olympic Delivery Authority – had a mammoth job to choose the shortlist and eventual winners.

But they managed it, and their decisions were revealed on the night by host Clive Anderson who, before getting down to the business of presenting the actual awards, had the audience in fits of laughter with his wry observations, witty put-downs, and tongue-in-cheek digs at 'elf and safety'.

Once all the awards had been handed out, and the applause and celebration had died down it was time to move on to the real business of the night: partying! There was an array of entertainment laid on, including table football, pool, darts, and, of course, a band, whose members will forever hold their peace about some of the shapes they saw being thrown on the dancefloor in front of them!

The main entertainment of the night, however, was the casino, whose proceeds went to our chosen charity, The Stroke Association. Perhaps it was the inspiring speech given by the Association’s representative at the beginning of the evening, in which it was explained that stroke is the leading cause of disability in the UK and can shatter the lives of not just its victims but also their families and loved ones, or maybe it's just that they are inveterate gamblers, but our generous guests managed to raise a whopping £3500 for the cause, adding substantially to the funds already raised by SHP's dieting columnist Jolly John Watson.

All in all, it was a wonderful night, even for those who were shortlisted for an award but went home empty-handed. Most of them left with a determination to do better next year, while those who hadn't entered this time were already planning their applications for 2008.
